Dentists are starting to see an increase in TMJ cases in their dental offices and they suspect that stress, specifically stress from Covid, could have been the trigger.
It’s been shown that the more stress a patient has in their life the more likely it is that the TMJ symptoms will be more severe. This is not to say that stress causes TMJ, but rather that stress can make any pre-existing TMJ symptoms worse. Patients who haven’t felt the need to go to a dentists for their TMJ previously are now finding that they can no longer ignore their TMJ symptoms.
Even now we’re learning more and more about Covid every day, but from what we currently know it’s likely that it isn’t Covid that’s amplifying TMJ symptoms, but rather the stress resulting from it.
While some TMJ cases may require a specialist to diagnose or treat, others may simply need a mouthguard to help with the symptoms.
